Since opening its doors just a year ago, Antalis’s Smart Packaging Centre has helped over 50 customers to find solutions to their packaging challenges.

Based at the company’s head office in Coalville, the Smart Packaging Centre is Antalis’s state-of-the art lab and solutions hub. Its packaging designers and technologists are on-hand to help customers, from eCommerce companies and logistics providers, through to manufacturers, resolve a range of packaging-related issues.

Rising costs of materials and distribution, coupled with a need to address environmental concerns that have put packaging in the spotlight over recent years, has put mounting pressure on many eCommerce and logistics companies. This has certainly been the case for the vast majority of customers visiting the Smart Packaging Centre over the last year, as Packaging Technologist Manager Jason Poxon has observed: “Most customers visiting the centre are looking to reduce their pack cost and/or cut waste and improve their environmental footprint and credentials. We find that very often these three issues work hand-in-hand, particularly as customers are often using more packaging than they need to”.

The Smart Packaging Centre provides a free service for customers as part of the consultation and packaging design process for companies that choose Antalis to implement their packaging solutions.  It is a space where clients can bring their products and any existing packaging with them and talk through their concerns, issues and goals, after which the Antalis designers will develop new bespoke pack designs and live samples for the customer to take away to test.

The process can take a matter of hours, which can be an important factor for businesses up against deadlines and with a tricky problem to resolve. This was the case for client TheVeganKind, a provider of subscription boxes for vegans, who needed four limited-edition box designs. As well as being

beautifully designed, the boxes also needed to be robust, durable and cost effective. Scott McCulloch, co-founder and chief executive at TheVeganKind, commented on the Smart Packaging Centre’s service: “From creating design mock ups of our bespoke idea to the speed of execution – they have been brilliant.”

“The speed is down to the on-site tools that Antalis has invested in, including industry-leading software Impact CAD, which has been specifically designed for the packaging industry, and a Zund G3 L-2300 cutting table. Antalis will be expanding the capability of the Smart Packaging Centre over the summer with further investment”, added Jason Poxon.

In addition to pack design and creation, customers have also been able to benefit from on-site expertise in void fill and cushioning that can help reduce product damage, increase packaging efficiency and boost customer experience, as well as ways to improve environmental credentials.

Jason commented further: “The team here have real pride and passion in what they do, and that is certainly something that customers seem to have been impressed with over this first year. The feedback we have had from customers who have made use of the Smart Packaging Centre has been incredible. We have had many worried faces coming through our door, but they have left feeling relieved and smiling after seeing how we can help them.

“We expected cost to be one of the biggest concerns for customers, and that has certainly been the case. But what we have been able to demonstrate is how bespoke packaging can address this issue in a number of different ways, from improving speed on the packing line to reducing product damage and cutting the amount of packaging material used.

“With the expansion of our service due to the new equipment we have got coming on line later this year, we are looking forward to being able to help even more customers.
