The Annual talkSPORT Brother Football Tournament is something we look forward to every year, and when my football avid colleagues in the Antalis Packaging Team received the invitation to this year’s event, they were eager to accept the opportunity to play at the £105 million FA’s St George’s Park. The group of 7 joined teams from across the UK, along with ex-footballers Chris Iwelumo and Kevin Davies.

On arrival at the stadium we were greeted by Chris Iwelumo (ex-Scottish international and current football pundit) and Kevin Davies (ex-England international and Bolton legend) who showed us to the impressive changing rooms, where their kits and bags were hanging below their named plaques on the wall. Our team then followed in the footsteps of the England National Team, through the tunnel signed by current and historic England footballing legends, onto an outstanding full size indoor football pitch. All in time for a quick warm up before the tournament began.

Match one: 3 – 0

The first match was against last year’s winners, talkSPORT, who had Chris Iwelumo heading up the strike force. At half time it was all to play for with the score still 0-0. talkSPORT turned up the pace in the second half, and despite Antalis’s Steve Marples pulling off some heroic saves, Chris Iwelumo scored a hat trick in the last 2 minutes leaving the score at 3-0 to talkSPORT on the final whistle.

Match two: 3 – 1

Coming in to the second game against Team Parlour, Antalis Packaging decided to take on a “pass to feet” approach. Despite all their efforts the team conceded 3 goals from their opponents, but with one minute to go managed to score their first goal of the tournament, keeping the team in high spirits.

The Third and Final Match…

After a much need 20 minute break to rest their legs, Antalis were soon back on the pitch ready for their final game against Team Gascoigne. Still high in spirts and determined to beat the opposition, John James was quick off the mark and scored an impressive goal, followed by another 2 goals to give him a hat trick before half time. Moving in to the second half, Team Gascoigne netted a goal to bring the score to 3-1, followed by a final 2 goals from Team Antalis, making the final score 5-1

The Ultimate Result

After 3 exhausting matches, the leader’s board was looking risky for Antalis Packaging as they were joint second with Team Parlour… however a late victory from the opposition’s last game unfortunately saw Antalis out of the competition. Leaving the team to go back to the changing room for an ice bath, which I’m told they later regretted.

Well done to everyone who played, the event was fun for all and perfectly managed.
