The Issue

The customer was using heat shrink to contain loads on to pallets. This involved a shrink hood being placed over a pallet and a flame gun being used to shrink the film and contain the load. 1200 pallets were being wrapped per day, at an average speed of 4/5 minutes per pallet.

The customer was experiencing three key issues with this method:

  1. The pallet shrink gun presented a fire hazard and other health and safety implications from employees bending down and occasionally burning themselves.
  2. The client perceived the cost of the shrink hood to be expensive, and with only one size available, wastage was also high.
  3. The customer was also experiencing high labour cost per pallet.

The Solution

The systems team visited the client to qualify the need. Using the information gathered they proposed the installation of 4 Lantech S300XT Semi-Automatic Pallet Wrappers; a solution that would remove the issues they were experiencing. Following the proposal, a Lantech machine was demonstrated at the customers site and was left there for several weeks to assess suitability. Visits were also arranged to existing customer sites to see their Lantech S300XT pallet wrappers in action.

Alongside the demonstrations, the team also carried out a film audit and film trials to ensure the best stretch-film was selected to compliment the pallet wrapper. The audit provided the customer with extremely accurate information regarding cost savings and packaging waste reduction.

The new solution meant that pallets could be taken to the wrap zone where a top sheet would be added to the pallet and wrapping would be instigated remotely. This provided improved containment in conjunction with the pre-perforated top sheets and the wrapping of pallets was completed over 70% quicker. The fire hazard was removed and the health and safety issues caused by burning, twisting and bending were also removed. Packaging waste was reduced by 75% and the customer experienced cost savings of over 60%.
